NEW YORK - After James Paxton’s back surgery, the Yankees scrambled to acquire some pitching depth. They have signed veteran right-handed pitcher Chad Bettis to a minor-league deal with an invite to spring training. The 30-year-old right-hander is coming off a forgettable season in 2019, finishing 1-6 with a 6.08 ERA in 39 appearances, including 3 starts.

For the last two months of 2019, Bettis was out after having bilateral hip surgery in August. The Yankees are looking for a bounce back year for Chad Bettis, who in his career is 31-31 with a 5.12 ERA in seven seasons with the Rockies. While his career record and earned run average are nothing to write home about, his 60.8% groundball rate can come into play when competing for a spot on the Yankee roster.

With James Paxton out approximately until May and Domingo German suspended for 63 games, the Yankees will look to collect pitching depth. Bettis has been a starter for most of his career, but can come out of the bullpen as the long man in NY.

Chad Bettis could be in play for a starting pitching role or be used as an extra man in the pen.
